William Warren Chapman (1814-1859) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and attended West Point. He served in the second Seminole War in Florida, as quartermaster and then commander of Fort Foster. After the war, he served in Tennessee and New York until 1846, when he became staff assistant quartermaster in the army of General John E. Wool in San Antonio, Texas.
